I have been following the work of Mallory Page for a while and last week after I had completed her interview we were both featured on The SoGood app blog the same day.  Serendipitous to be sure.  I am captured by these enveloping vaporous yet colorful abstract pieces of art.

Mallory Page

New Orleans, Louisiana

What is your training?

I have a BID in Interior Design and a minor in Architecture History from Louisiana State University. I am a self taught painter, mostly getting influence from extensive travel, having an artist mother and seeing every museum show possible.

What inspires you and your designs?

Love. Light. Human Emotion. Color. Mother Ocean. Camellias Design. Fashion. Gosh, everything.

What is your favorite piece? pictures if possible…

I made two pieces last year that I am particularly fond of

SONY DSC Holy Seduction 60×72 and

Ever Wonder 72×72

How has the your area influenced your work?

There is so much passion in Louisiana culture- it’s a dense fog that sinks in over the years. It’s the sultry part of my work.

What is your favorite restaurant in New Orleans?

Irene’s. I love the atmosphere, but it’s also where I was taken on my last first date. It’s been a favorite since.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Corpse Revier #2: Equal parts Gin, Lillet Blanc, Cointreau, and lemon juice with a dash of Absinthe.

How do you balance personal life and work?

Living an artful life is a full time job that never feels like work- even though you’re always working like a dog.  I think travel helps me more than anything. It’s the simplest thing- sitting on a flight. This is the only time I am forced to sit and daydream. I finally get to pick up the hoards of magazines I have stockpiled and be inspired by all of the gorgeous things that are being made in this world.  I dream up the most crazy ideas about how I’ll decorate my dream house or what kind of project I want to work on next.  It’s my own form of therapy. I get off my plane a new woman, as if I can do anything.

Dream trip?

This year we are taking a break from Mardi Gras and going to the island of Mustique followed by sailing the Grenadines. I have always wanted to take a sailing trip in the Caribbean, I truly cannot wait.

I love the sea. I am so inspired by the vast and universally intriguing nature of sweet mother ocean. It’s a sublime source for color inspiration.

Dream commission?

Anything very very large. I love working in extra human scale.

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

My “go to” is always Deb Shriver’s book Stealing Magnolias. It’s such an elegant book.

Who is your style icon?

Claire Underwood, Robin Wright’s character on House of Cards. I love the show, but I watch mainly to see her wardrobe.

Your favorite up and coming artist?

I just purchased a Christy Lee Rogers piece from her Reckless Unbound series.  I love how she plays with Chiaroscuro and uses water as her medium. Not to mention her sense of color is brilliant.

What is your most treasured possession?

My wedding band.

 What are you reading?

Diana Vreeland Memos: The Vogue Years, darling.

 What are you listening to?

I drift somewhere between Johnny Cash and

Lily Allen pandora stations… one extreme to another.

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

I love Elements of Style. Not only is Erin Gates superbly chic, she is delightfully refreshing and kind. I am so happy to have a piece of my work in her new book being published this fall. Also I read Town and Country, Elle Decor, Veranda & Architectural Digest.

Here are just a few of my favorites of her etherial abstracts…

  2. Great post on a great artist and fellow LSU Interior Design Alum!

I’m lucky enough to own one of Mallory’s Scribbles Series paintings. It hangs above my desk in my office, in a spot where I often look when I gather my thoughts. It’s a nice place to rest the eyes while my mind is working.
