I am beyond thrilled for my Newport trip today.
So very serendipitously the newportFILM is going on right now with an airing of the digitally remastered version of one of my very favorite documentaries and the next evening the film I have been dying to see about my personal icon, Iris Apfel.
newportFILM was founded in 2010 to nurture discovery, creative achievement and community dialogue through the art of documentary film.
Joining in the fun is truly going to be wild with a costume and picnic contest….Game on!
Tonight I will be attending
8:00PM – Film begins
This 1975 cult-classic documentary has been digitally remastered and is being shown as a precursor to our tribute to the film’s director, legendary documentarian Albert Maysles, which will take place at the IRIS event on July 16 at Marble House. “The film, is by any standards, extraordinary: it is probably one of the most complete descriptions of a relationship ever seen on film, undoubtedly one of the oddest, and certainly one of the most beautiful.” – London Sunday Times
ABOUT THE FILM:
Grey Gardens is a 1975 American documentary film by Albert and David Maysles. The film depicts the everyday lives of two reclusive upper class women, a mother and daughter both named Edith Beale, who lived at Grey Gardens, a derelict mansion at 3 West End Road in the wealthy Georgica Pond neighborhood of East Hampton, New York. The film was screened at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival but was not entered into the main competition.
Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer also directed, and Susan Froemke was the associate producer. Although Susan Froemke is often credited as being one of the editors (and was featured for this in Vanity Fair magazine) she did not take any part in the original editing of the film. The film was edited by Ellen Hovde (editor of Gimme Shelter and Salesman) and Muffie Meyer.
In 2010 the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. In a 2014 Sight and Sound poll, film critics voted Grey Gardens the joint ninth best documentary film of all time.

“A joyous celebration of creativity and razor-sharp wit.” – Variety
ABOUT THE FILM:
The latest film from legendary documentarian Albert Maysles (GREY GARDENS, GIMME SHELTER), IRIS pairs the late 88-year-old filmmaker (who passed away on March 5) with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. “I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.”
