Wallpaper Wednesday: Martinique Goes for Gold
Some wallpapers are classics. Others are legends. And then there is Martinique, the iconic banana leaf wallpaper serving Hollywood glamour since the 1940s.
Originally created in 1942 by CW Stockwell’s Lucile and Remy Chatain, alongside illustrator Albert Stockdale, the tropical pattern became design royalty when Don Loper installed it at the Beverly Hills Hotel in 1949. Those fabulous banana leaves have been synonymous with the Pink Palace ever since.
Fast-forward 80-plus years, and this grande dame has gotten a seriously fabulous facelift!
Enter Martinique Obsession in Gold, a wildly wonderful collaboration between CW Stockwell and George Venson of VOUTSA.
Venson brings a playful artistic twist to the legendary leaves, layering expressive artwork over the familiar tropical pattern. And did I mention the hand-leafed gold paper? Be still my maximalist heart!
It is glamorous, irreverent, a little outrageous, and absolutely fabulous. Think Old Hollywood meets contemporary art collector with a cocktail in hand.
I am picturing this jewel in a powder room, fabulous bar, or dramatic entry. Why whisper when you can make an entrance?
The original will forever have my heart, but this gilded reinvention has me swooning.
Because more is more, especially when gold is involved!
