Well, this checks quite a few of my boxes.

Hot pink. Cowboys. Cacti. Dogs. Western nostalgia. A little weirdness. A LOT of color.

Meet Jonah Ballard, the self-taught artist behind The Painted Ladies.

Born and raised in Arizona, Jonah started painting at just fifteen while working with his parents on their hand-painted home décor business, also called The Painted Ladies. What began with lettering signs eventually became his own wonderfully recognizable world of contemporary acrylic paintings.

His signature? PINK. Lots and lots of glorious pink.

Jonah’s work mixes dreamy portraiture, desert landscapes, pop culture, cacti and Western imagery with a surreal quality that makes you stop and look twice. His paintings explore imagination, transformation and the idea that what we envision can ultimately shape our reality.

Naturally, I am particularly drawn to the Western pieces. Shocking, I know.

Cowboys, Marlboros, horses, desert landscapes and saturated color? Sign. Me. Up.

And apparently there is much more coming. Jonah’s upcoming exhibition, A Western Story, debuts November 5 through 7 in Austin with more than twenty original works inspired by the American West. The collection combines his signature pink palette with reimagined Western stories and imagery.

I also love that the work doesn’t take itself too seriously. A pink saguaro here, a strawberry-colored hound there, a cowboy thrown into the mix. It is playful, graphic, nostalgic and just strange enough to make it interesting.

Basically, art that refuses to behave.
