 What is your training?
lucy-smith-design-logo
I have a degree in Interior Design, but the furniture design just came over  years of looking for the right pieces and the unique situation of my husband’s metal fabrication company for production

What inspires you and your designs?
I get most of my inspiration from wandering around the metal shop.  There is always some sheet of steel scrap or new industrial part that gets my creative process in gear.  I usually combine those ideas with details I stumble upon while perusing 1st dibs or from cool architecture while traveling- and jewelry- I can always take something from details in various jewelry.

What is your favorite piece?
the Vivi side table.  It’s clean and simple, so I haven’t grown tired of it.  It come in 2 standard sizes and 20 plus finishes.

I also love this Jax table which comes in coffee and console styles.  There are so many options within the line!

How has the south influenced your work?
I have always lived in the south and I know that it shows in the pieces that I make.  How could it not?

What is your favorite restaurant in (your city)?
thumb_600
Garfrericks Cafe– They serve “clean eating” kind of food from their nearby farm!

What is your favorite cocktail?
sweetwater-420
Red wine or Sweetwater 420 on draft.

How do you balance personal life and work?
Luckily, I can set my own hours so I am able to take my 3 kids to school and pick them up in the afternoons which is a huge blessing. I also do a lot of work while sitting at my kitchen island, so I’m able to maintain a sort of domestic existence during the day. I have said before, that the balance between family/work is my biggest struggle.  It’s still difficult to be fully present at home with the details of business looming in the background, but it’s definitely my priority.

Dream trip?
Unknown
Europe for a whole summer with my family- I’d for sure want to sneak a week in near the coast somewhere with just my husband and SIT on the beach.

Dream commission?
bergdorf-goodman
I would love to do something unique for a swanky department store. Bergdorfs in Manhattan- now that would be a dream!

Your favorite hostess gift?
I’m always toying with designs for accessories. I’d love to have something special/personal that I’ve made to give people as hostess gifts or for special occasions. For High Point market we made bracelets based on the Vogue hex table.  The IMC Market people had designed a fabulous forties deco sort of poster for their furniture preview cover featuring the table as a bracelet, so we made some just like on the cover to give to customers.

What is your most treasured possession?
I have several pieces of art that I would consider my most treasured possessions, but I also really love my Spanish gold coin necklace that my husband gave me for mother’s day a few years back.  I wear it almost every day! My sound machine also ranks pretty high on the list.

What are you listening to?
The+Weeks+weeks2
Mostly worship mixes. Also, Just got back from the beach with friends and listened to a wide variety- Mumford and Sons, Ryan Adams, The Weeks– who I just learned about- they sound a lot like the Kings Of Leon.

Favorite Fashion / Design Blogs?
I SHOULD read more fashion/designs blogs, but it’s usually FOOD blogs! Healthy take-out is almost non-existent in our small town, so I’m always looking for  food/juice recipes ( that are easy).
Here are some of the fabulous pieces in the line.  Check out her website to see it all.
