Mountain Magic

Whimsical, colorful and cozy define this cottage. I am spending a few weeks working remotely from my mountain cottage and this find makes me feel right at home.

” With a storybook color scheme and patterns galore, interior designer Anthony Baratta transformed both the summer and the winter homes of this all-seasons Adirondacks compound into a vibrant, cozy refuge in the woods.”

The 9.6-acre camp fronts a private lake in New York’s Adirondack Mountains.

In the hallway of the Summer House — across a woodland creek from the all-season main cabin, the Winter House — log walls set the baseline for designer Anthony Baratta’s rhythmic colors and patterns. Bold tones in a folk-art quilt and a Casa dos Tapetes de Arraiolos rug jibe with the painted blue floor.

Vibrant contrasts of hue, proportion, and style animate the Winter House’s living room. Ample upholstery and a vast rug hold their own against the Paul Bunyan-scale hearth and tree-trunk beams. The custom hooked rug pairs geometry that recurs throughout the space with nature imagery dear to the owner, a wildlife photographer. A quilt and needlepoint pillow depict butterflies, a favorite subject of hers. The Victorian lamp, Georgian wing chair, and shelves of lusterware and Delft bespeak decades of collecting.

Patchwork perks up the mammoth custom ottoman. Upholstery detailing like nailheads and welting add more color and texture.

A French painted clock and the front door in Benjamin Moore’s Exotic Red chime with the exuberant palette.

The circa-1920s banister and newel post in the Winter House embody rustic Adirondack style — as does a staghorn-and-birch console table, which the owner commissioned locally only a few years ago. Blues in the transferware lamp and an 18th- century Scandinavian marriage box echo newly stenciled paneling.

Old pine walls and eaves were left unpainted in the summer sleeping quarters.

The monarch of the boathouse is a spacious, blue canopy-crowned Budsin Wood Craft electric launch, which plies the lake as quietly as a canoe.

Pillows, throws, and blankets — in snug fabrics from fresh-air standbys like L.L.Bean, Pendleton, and Faribault Woolen Mill Co. — await get-togethers on the lean-to’s ground-level mattress. Wine-barrel Adirondack chairs ring the fire pit.
