Sarah Collins Lawler of Tela Mercantile

Atlanta, Georgia

What inspires you and your designs?

EVERYTHING !!!! I literally find inspiration everywhere. Whether it’s the vibrant graffiti in the urban parts of my city or the graceful flight of birds and butterflies in my neighborhood, I find endless amounts of creativity in the world around me. Traveling, especially, ignites my imagination. During my recent trip to Cartagena, Colombia, I was captivated by the colored walls of the Getsemani neighborhood, and the coconut carts along the streets, and the bustling fruit basket vendors. Every sight serves as fuel for my creative fire. Our world is a masterpiece with inspiration at every corner.

What is your favorite piece?

Ohh this is tough, but I think it has to be a piece I made that was custom for a friend to wear to a wedding in Ravello, Italy. We worked together to source colors and fabrics and make a new style, and it came out amazing. Sadly it was made from dead stock fabric and cannot be repurchased which makes it one of a kind and even more special.

What is your favorite restaurant in Atlanta?

Wow this might be the hardest question I have ever received. Atlanta has AMAZING food, and I am a foodie, so too many to list. But for Mexican, I have been going to Jalisco, one mile away from me since I was 10 years old, and I have a plaque on the wall with my name on it, but if we are referring to a bougie experience, I have to say Lazy Betty all day!

 What is your favorite cocktail?

Also, a tough but spicy skinny marg on the rocks has to have a tajin rim and be made with Espolon Blanco Tequila.

How do you balance personal life and work?

Balancing two jobs alongside my cherished social and family commitments is undeniably challenging and I am ALWAYS busy and barely have a free day. My weekends are a whirlwind of activity, from spending time with my beloved nieces and nephew to enjoying outings with friends at the farmer’s market or picnics. I make it a point never to miss important milestones like baby showers and weddings. My friends joke and say I am always at UPS and they are not wrong, but I try to get my Tela things done by 2 pm on Saturday’s and then I spend a few hours on Sunday working too. It is all about balance and prioritization, but also you have to protect yourself too and make sure to make time for yourself. No perfect recipe but you will get it down!

Dream trip?

These questions truly are so tough, but right now, the next dream trip is to Lisbon, Portugal, and San Sebastian. If you were to ask me my favorite places I have been to it would have to be Zanzibar, Marrakesh, Capri, Ravello, Florence and Tulum!
