Southern Artist Spotlight: Alexis Walter

Alexis Walter

New Orleans, Louisiana

What is your training?

I flip-flopped between Interior Design and Fine Art throughout college and eventually decided to focus solely on art when I transferred to Tulane.

What inspires you and your art?

I am inspired by color and how colors change depending on the time of day and where in the world you are. I really love to recreate colors from antiques & historical buildings. I think that’s why my work is often used in rooms with older pieces.

New Orleans is also a font of inspiration for me. I am so lucky to be surrounded by such a beautiful, vibrant, and colorful city every day. Love it so much!

What is your favorite installation of your work or piece?

My favorite installation is in this room designed by the amazing Gerrie Bremerman. This was the first painting of mine Gerrie used in one of her designs. She is such an icon and has been very helpful to me. I am so fortunate to have my work in her shop and design projects. I still have to pinch myself every time I think about it.

How has the south influenced your work?

The south, and New Orleans and the surrounding areas in particular, are huge influences in my work. My paintings are all abstract landscapes and are inspired by the swamps and marshes just outside of New Orleans.

What is your favorite restaurant in NOLA?

Eleven79

It’s a quaint Italian restaurant with a NOLA spin. It’s always full of characters. Frank Sinatra and Louis Prima (a hometown favorite) are always playing in the background. There’s never been a time where we didn’t have a blast there.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Depends on the season. In the summer it’s a Pimm’s Cup and when it’s cooler it would be a Whiskey Sour (Ina’s recipe is the best!) with lots of Maraschino cherries.

How do you balance personal life and work?

Honestly, it’s tough for me to balance the two. I would paint all day if I could and I feel so blessed I am able to. When work doesn’t feel like work it’s not that easy to stop. We are about to start construction on a studio behind our house and I’m hoping that it’s easier to balance work and my personal life when there is less time wasted in transit. Wish me luck!

Dream trip?

My favorite trip was to Venice, Italy. I totally love everything about it. I think my dream trip would be to go back and spend a month or so getting more acquainted with the city.

Dream commission?

I work with some amazing clients and designers who give me lots of creative leeway, which in itself is a dream. I think my ultimate dream would be for a museum commission one of my pieces for its private collection.

Your favorite hostess gift?

I had a custom candle from Saint Parfum created a few years ago and love to give them as hostess gifts. I save my paper palettes and use them to wrap the candles. If it’s a last minute get together, I’ll pick up some champagne and petits fours on the way.

Who is your style icon?

We are heading into dream land again- I love Emmanuelle Alt’s style

Your favorite up and coming artist?

There are so many- Teil Duncan , of course, thanks so much for mentioning me. I am head over heels for her figures!

My newest favorite artist is Christina Baker. I first saw her work on Pinterest and am swooning over it

What is your most treasured possession?

For our first anniversary my husband gave me a ceramic replica of the house where he proposed. It was my apartment at the time and my landlord and good friend, Michael J. Clement, who is an amazing ceramic artist, built a tiny version of the little shotgun house. It’s always the first thing I pack when we evacuate.
