Terrific Taylor Burke Home and the “Style It” Challenge

I am thrilled to share the opportunity to get to know Julianne Taylor. Julianne is the lady and design dynamo behind the blossoming brand Taylor Burke Home, named for Julianne and her sister. This growing brand has made its mark at High Point Market as a rising star. I am looking forward to the new introductions at the fall market.

What is your training?

I have a BFA in Interior Design from the University of Georgia. I spent a semester at Parsons School of Design in NY as part of my studies. I also have a masters degree in Human Resources from the University of South Carolina, which is where I met my husband. I’ve had a home based interior design business for over a decade. Much of this time was spent over seas in Melbourne, Australia, Barcelona, Spain, Shanghai, China, and Seoul, Korea as we followed my husband’s career with General Motors. I was able to travel and shop the flea markets in different countries, and learn the rich history behind design elements that we use today.

What inspires you and your designs?

My number 1 inspiration is NY Fashion Week. I find elements and details that are part of fashion make their way into home décor about 18 months afterwards. It’s not a literal translation, but the color, texture of materials, and overall feeling of an apparel collection can be inspiring to our designs.

Vintage is also inspiring. All things old are new again. I love to take something inspired by an old piece and make it new and fresh just by changing the materials or proportion.

What is your favorite piece?

I have several favorite pieces, and they are all products that we designed.

Tribeca Brass Console- This is by far my #1 favorite piece in the whole collection. We collaborated with the guys from the Detroit Wallpaper Company to create colorful decals for the glass panels on this piece. It’s a real “wow” statement in a room.

Gregg Park Coffee Table—inspired by the classic spindle chair. I loved pushing this look a bit further to create an interesting coffee table.

Solar Agate Table—I love the natural stone on this and how large it is. It’s a great little drink table!

What is your favorite cocktail?

Moscow Mule. I discovered this while living in Barcelona of all places! Hands down—the best, especially when you use fresh lemon!

What is your personal Mantra?

I’m a huge believer in encouraging and supporting other creatives—especially small women owned businesses. With a combined background in Interior Design and HR, I enjoy coaching and mentoring other women to help them succeed. I heard someone once say that if we weren’t so busy tearing each other down we could rule the world! Amen to that!

How do you balance personal life and work?

It’s a challenge everyday, and it’s so important for my kids to know that they are number 1. I have a 7, 6, and 5 yr old—and being a mom, wife, and business owner requires lots of juggling and a very supportive partner. I try to squeeze my longer days into Tues/Wed/Thur and leave the office when the kids get home from school on Mondays and Fridays. Hiring the right people to run the office and work alongside you is key to being able to turn it off at the end of the day.

Who is your style icon?

I wouldn’t say she’s my “icon”, but I absolutely loved that year when Sharon Stone wore a GAP black turtleneck to the Oscars with a bazillion dollars worth of jewelry.

That’s my everyday personal style (minus the bazillion dollars worth of jewelry!), basic black with a Chanel necklace and sassy shoes. I approach my interiors the same way that I dress—it’s all about the accessories….and one great piece can really make a statement.

Your favorite up and coming designer?

He’s already well established, but my favorite interior designer is Miles Redd– hands down! I love his bold use of color and I admire the risks that he takes. Right up my alley!

What are you reading?

Hate to say it, but I’m not a reader. When I power down—it’s “Real Housewives” time. I can get totally absorbed into reality TV. And I do LOVE magazines—all of the good interior design ones are on my nightstand.
