The Ultimate Luxury U.S. Hotel Bucket List
If there’s one thing I collect almost as enthusiastically as wallpaper samples and fabric swatches, it’s dream hotels.
My travel bucket list is a living, breathing document that grows every time I stumble across an impossibly beautiful resort, a legendary grand hotel, or a ranch where I suddenly convince myself I should become a cowgirl full-time. Some of these places I’ve been lucky enough to experience firsthand. Others are still sitting patiently at the very top of my “one day” list, just waiting for me to book the flight.
One thing is certain: the best hotels don’t just give you a place to sleep. They tell a story. They inspire your wardrobe, your home, your next dinner party, and sometimes even your outlook on life. I can’t tell you how many interiors I’ve mentally bookmarked—or shamelessly borrowed inspiration from—while traveling.
This post kicks off an expanded Travel Tuesday series where I’ll be sharing the hotels, inns, ranches, lodges, and hidden gems that have captured my imagination (or completely won me over in person). Along the way, I’ll be updating these guides with my own experiences, favorite rooms, can’t-miss meals, shopping discoveries, and all the little details that make a place unforgettable.
We’re starting close to home with some of the most extraordinary hotels the United States has to offer. From glamorous California hideaways and iconic grand hotels to barefoot island escapes and luxury ranches where cowboy boots are always appropriate, these are the American destinations that have earned a permanent spot on my bucket list with a few I have yet to explore.
So grab a cocktail, start making vacation plans, and if you happen to own a private jet… call me. I travel well.
San Ysidro Ranch
Montecito, California
Hollywood glamour meets California garden romance.
Hidden beneath centuries-old oak trees in Montecito, San Ysidro Ranch has welcomed everyone from Winston Churchill to Audrey Hepburn and is perhaps best known as the honeymoon destination of John and Jacqueline Kennedy. Every ivy-covered cottage feels wonderfully secluded, complete with stone fireplaces, private patios, outdoor soaking tubs, and gardens overflowing with roses and lavender.
The atmosphere is effortlessly elegant rather than flashy. It feels like the California dream wrapped in climbing roses and hummingbirds. Between leisurely breakfasts overlooking the mountains, afternoon strolls through lush gardens, and evenings by a crackling fire, it’s exactly the kind of place where time slows down in the very best way.
Why It’s on My Bucket List
It embodies timeless romance, understated luxury, and California charm that never goes out of style.

Days are spent horseback riding through scenic trails, fly fishing crystal-clear streams, hiking forest paths, relaxing in the spa, or simply sitting on the porch with a glass of sweet tea while the mountains work their magic.
The food alone is worth the journey. Blackberry Farm is internationally celebrated for its farm-to-table cuisine, award-winning wine cellar, artisan cheeses, and impeccable service.
The interiors are everything I love—collected, layered, timeless, and deeply rooted in Southern tradition without ever feeling fussy.

Amangiri
Canyon Point, Utah
Where architecture disappears into the desert.
Few hotels have achieved the legendary status of Amangiri. Rising organically from the dramatic desert landscape of southern Utah, the resort feels less like a hotel and more like a work of modern art.
Minimalist architecture, warm stone, endless glass, and uninterrupted views create an atmosphere of complete serenity. Every suite is designed to showcase the surrounding mesas, canyons, and ever-changing desert light.
Luxury here isn’t about excess. It’s about silence, space, and extraordinary design.
