Color, horses, flowers, animals, a little wildness and absolutely no fear of a bold brushstroke? Obviously, I am in.

This week’s Art Love is the wonderfully exuberant work of California-based artist Anne-Louise Ewen.

Born in New Orleans and now living and working in Joshua Tree, Ewen creates expressive, gestural paintings that are all about brushwork, color and freedom. Her subject matter wanders beautifully from flowers and women to cats, wild beasts, mythology and, lucky for me, horses.

Her latest collections include Summer Holiday and We Ride at Dawn from 2026, along with Flowering, The Guardians and The Flowers, The Women. I particularly love the looseness of her work. It feels collected, soulful and slightly untamed, exactly the kind of art that can wake up an entire room.

And naturally, the horse paintings stopped me in my tracks. No surprise there.

Her work feels joyful without being sweet, sophisticated without taking itself too seriously, and full of personality. More is more, color is always a good idea, and apparently horses make everything better.
