Artist Spotlight Series: Chambers Austelle

I am always on the hunt for new artists to feature in my Artist Spotlight Series.

Look Linger Love introduced me to this incredible artist on her blog last week and I have been salivation to know more as I am mesmerized by this artist’s works. These Charleston artists have it going on to say the least!

The bold colors surrounding the etherial faces are just magical.

What is your training?

I received a BA in Studio Arts from the College of Charleston.

What inspires you and your designs?

I find inspiration in the things that help me translate my stories. I am interested in the mind. Memories and perception. Dissonance and tension. Stillness. How we move in our bodies and how our bodies move through space.

The inspiration comes from all directions. It could be a shape, an idea, or a certain color palette. I’m always searching my surroundings and trying to look at things in a different way.

How has your area influenced your work?

Charleston is such an amazing city to live in. I think the way it influences my work the most is being surrounded by so many creative, motivated peers. It keeps me excited and engaged.

What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?

Oo. That’s a difficult question. We have so many restaurants to choose from. I’d have to say our go to is Rue de Jean.

     Anything with champagne in it.

How do you balance personal life and work?

My husband is a writer and musician, so our home life is a very creative one. We love what we do so we’re always working, but we make sure we make time to connect everyday and spend time with family and friends.

Dream trip?

    Southern France, Spain, and Italy

Dream commission?

I’ve never really thought about it. I really enjoy collaboration projects. Sally Mann was one of my earliest influences. In college, a few of my girlfriends and I drove six hours to make it to one of her exhibition openings. We hung out for about an hour and then drove another six hours home. It would be an incredible honor to work with her.

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

You can never go wrong with a bottle of wine or champagne.

Who is your style icon?

I’ve never really had a style icon. If I can look professional while still being comfortable, that’s the outfit for me. Half of my wardrobe definitely has a late 80s, early 90s vibe to it.

Your favorite up and coming artist?

       Alex Waggoner
