Artist Spotlight Series: Conny Gölz Schmitt

The vibrant and sculptural works of this artist are my latest obsession as seen at Hidell Brooks Gallery where she will have a show this summer

Conny Gölz Schmitt

Boston, Massachusetts 

  

What is your training? 

I studied Sinology and German Literature at University. About 15 years ago I took Printmaking Classes at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking in Norwalk, CT . Once I moved to the Boston area I took art and art history classes that were interesting to me at local colleges. 

What inspires you and your designs?

I am inspired by my material, the vintage book. These books are like time machines. They bring you back in time and bring their own time into the present. I view every object I create as an adventure that inspires the next.

 

What is your favorite piece?

I am very invested in each of my works. Every single piece is a reflection of my thoughts and emotions at the time I create it. Being unique and individual it is hard for me to identify a favorite piece.

How has the your area influenced your work?

I live on the Northshore of Boston very close to the ocean. The light here is incredible. I can’t help but be inspired by all the beauty that surrounds me. 

What is your favorite restaurant in Cambridge?

Shanghai Fresh in Cambridge, MA- I love authentic Chinese food since I spent 11 years in Taiwan.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Caipirinha

How do you balance personal life and work?

I have a home studio and a studio in another town. If I need to stick around my house for dog and family I work at home and if I need peace and quiet I go to my other studio. 

Dream trip?

I would love to spend time again in China and Taiwan.

Dream commission?

A huge mobile constructed of book sculptures
