Artist Spotlight Series: Laura Dargan

I am excited to introduce you to a talent I have recently discovered.

I am totally enamored with the colorful abstract expressionist work of this Charleston artist on the rise.

Enjoy getting to know his rising star

Laura Dargan

Charleston, South Carolina

What is your training?

I am a “self-taught artist” as they say. I didn’t formally study art at any point but I have learned so much from other artists and instructors. Seeking out technical advice and instruction from various outlets has allowed me to continue to grow as an artist.

What inspires you and your designs?

My work begins with combinations of colors and shapes that I gather from landscapes, architecture and life in general.

What is your favorite piece?

Currently, my favorite piece of mine is a 36” x 48” titled Primary Purpose

How has the your area influenced your work?

Charleston is one of the most inspirational places to be. The landscape can’t be beat and neither can the people. The arts community is so supportive but it’s also saturated so it really motivates you to push your boundaries.

What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?

Stella’s. It’s a Greek restaurant in downtown Charleston and it is fabulous.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Greyhound

How do you balance personal life and work?

It’s all one and the same for me!

Dream trip?

Greece

Dream commission?

Julie Mehretu’s diptych Howl at the SFMOMA is like a dream. I would love to create something on that scale.

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

I am a candle person. A new favorite is everything from Ash + Vine Botanicals.

Who is your style icon?

The owner of Hampden Clothing, Stacy Smallwood. She has the best style.

Your favorite up and coming artist?

Matthew Bober

What is your most treasured possession?

My Matthew Bober painting.

What are you reading?

Art books. I think reading about past artists and learning from their work is the greatest form of artistic development.

What are you listening to?

All sorts of music and podcasts.

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

Architectural Digest is my go to for magazines.
