I am happy to announce I have a stellar line up of artists coming for you in my Artist Spotlight Series.

This is a long overdue introduction to a talented artist from Charleston.

Enjoy getting to know

Susan Trott

Charleston, South Carolina

What is your training?

I attended the art school at Virginia Commonwealth University and have a degree from Winthrop College. I was the first student to receive an art degree under renowned Precisionist painter and department chair Ed Lewandowski.

What inspires you and your designs?

I am currently deeply in love with Cubism, but am most inspired by collagist Romare Bearden.

What is your favorite piece?

I included some favorite paintings of mine, “Soul Food Café,”

“Plaza Laundry Orb,”

“Seen and Noted,”

and collages “Green Kimono,”

“Maroon,”

“Blue Dress.”

How has the your area influenced your work?

I am very influenced by the architecture of Charleston. For many years that was my only subject matter. I realized I liked painting volume and shapes. Now I am more focused on color and the figure.

What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?

The Sweetwater Café on James Island. Spinach, tomato, and feta omelet is perfection.

What is your favorite cocktail?

I recently had a Parisian Martini at Nicos in Mt. Pleasant that was excellent.

How do you balance personal life and work?

Most of my life and friends revolve around art however art is a business and I try to go in the studio every morning and work on painting or collage. I sometimes have both going on at once. I try to come up with something monthly for The Charleston Artist Collective a fabulous group of creative people of whom I am a member.

Dream trip?

Of course to see Paris, the museums and places so many artists I admire lived and worked.

Dream commission?

My last commission was the Coburg Cow. My dream is to paint more local landmarks and iconic buildings, some of which are gone. I love painting historic architecture and people love seeing it.

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

Callie’s Biscuits.

Who is your style icon?

Kate Middleton and

Jackie Kennedy.

Your favorite up and coming artist?

My friend Karyn Healey who is more of a social realist than me but we have similar styles.

What is your most treasured possession?

A silver cuff bracelet by Stuart Nye that my mother gave me.

What are you reading?

I am reading “Red Brick, Black Mountain, White Clay” by Christopher Benfey, about the American Craft Movement and Black Mountain College in North Carolina.

Before that I read “Traveling with Pomegranates” by Sue Monk Kidd, whom I love.

What are you listening to?

Sirius radio BB King’s Bluesville

and Sixties on Six.

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

I love Vogue, Charleston Magazine and many other home and garden magazines. Blogs I look at regularly are Painting Perceptions, Powers of Observation and the Savvy Painter podcast.
