As you may have read last week, I am participating in the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge.

I repeat…It is the only way to get me motivated to personally get myself going on a design project.

The One Room Challenge™, currently in its thirteenth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design bloggers take the challenge and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over the six weekly posts. 

 

In addition to following along, everyone with a blog, is welcome to join the fun as a Guest Participant by  linking their own room transformations up during the six weeks. Each Thursday, the internet and social media are flooded with interior design inspiration, ideas, and encouragement.

To date, more than 1,900 rooms have been transformed through the One Room Challenge™. The event, and many of the spaces, have been recognized and featured in all the national magazines and is sponsored by media partner House Beautiful. 

So this one is the start to the One Room Challenge as well as the reveal of the news that we purchased my childhood home.  It had gone on the market last year and we decided against buying it, long story short…that changed and we moved in 3 weeks ago. See the whole house and saga start HERE.

Needless to say, we are in dire help of some remodeling and decorating.  I am trying to preserve the integrity of this wonderful home that my parents painstakingly built in 1963 yet make it my own.

This go round I will be transforming the family room that we always called the “Den”. It is an unusual room with a low dropped ceiling to create that coz feel. There are antique heart pine floors, antique wood walls and beams out of a barn that my grandfather purchased for my parents to use in the construction of their dream Williamsburg home. The fireplace and built in interior grill are off to the side.  These unusual characteristics provide a bit if a decorating challenge.

Here is the den as we redid the floors and moved in. The unfinished heart pine was so beautiful.  I tried to use a water based sealer to keep the color from changing but it still brings out the golden tones in the wood.

We went with natural heart pine in the den and dark everywhere else.

Here is the mess as we moved in. We really do not have much to use in this room and are really starting fresh.

I put some of my art on the existing nails to get it off the floor.
