I may never recover from Ett Hem on my recent trip with Grant Gibson. 

Truly.

I have stayed in some extraordinary hotels around the world, but Ett Hem in Stockholm has officially landed on my very short list of absolute favorites. It is quite simply one of the most exquisite hotels I have ever experienced.

Ett Hem means “a home” in Swedish, and that is exactly what it feels like, if your home happens to be impossibly chic, filled with incredible art and antiques, designed by Ilse Crawford, and staffed by people who seem to anticipate what you want before you even know you want it. The original house was built as a private residence in 1910, and owner Jeanette Mix and Crawford transformed it into a hotel while preserving that intimate residential feeling.

And then there are the candles.

Candles glowing at breakfast. Candles glowing in the afternoon. Candles glowing at dinner. Candles tucked into corners and flickering on tables. The entire place seems to exist in a perpetual state of candlelight, and I am completely here for it.

The interiors are layered, collected and quietly fabulous. Nothing screams for attention, yet you want to study absolutely everything. Beautiful textiles, books, art, antiques, contemporary pieces, flowers, fireplaces and those wonderfully Scandinavian moments of restraint. It is warm and soulful rather than precious, which is exactly why it works.

And the staff? Perfection.

The service is so intuitive and gracious that you almost forget you are in a hotel. There is none of that stiff luxury hotel formality. You are encouraged to settle in, wander into the kitchen, curl up with a book, have a drink in the garden or make yourself completely at home.

Which brings me to the food.

The kitchen is truly the heart of Ett Hem, with meals centered around local and seasonal ingredients. Everything we ate was fabulous, but more importantly, the entire experience felt effortless. Breakfast becomes an occasion. Lunch turns into an afternoon. Dinner makes you want to cancel whatever plans you had elsewhere.

That may be the magic of Ett Hem. It doesn’t feel like a hotel trying to impress you.

It simply is impressive.

Every tiny detail has been considered, but nothing feels overly designed. It is comfortable, intimate, sophisticated, soulful and completely transporting.

I left Stockholm wildly inspired and already plotting my return.

Ett Hem, you have my heart. I WILL be back…. Grant, when can we go?
