Wallpaper Wednesday: Macao by Pierre Frey
It’s Wallpaper Wednesday and today’s pick is a true work of art. Macao by Pierre Frey brings painterly color, movement, and a worldly spirit to the wall. With its bold palette and layered, almost hand-painted energy, this design feels vibrant, artistic, and unapologetically maximalist. Exactly the kind of pattern that stops you mid-scroll and makes a room instantly more interesting.
What makes MACAO even more special is the artist behind it. The design comes from the legendary Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave, whose work explores the relationship between painting, texture, illusion, and material. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, she became internationally celebrated for her extraordinary hand-painted paper sculptures that mimic textiles like silk, velvet, and brocade with astonishing trompe-l’oeil detail.
Her collaboration with Pierre Frey is part of the Mémoires Colorées collection, born from a long friendship between Borchgrave and Patrick Frey. The collection translates her painterly language and love of color into textiles and wallpapers that feel expressive, artistic, and full of personality.
The result? A wallpaper that feels less like decoration and more like hanging a piece of art on your walls. And you know I will always say yes to more color, more pattern, and more drama.
