Some wallpapers politely decorate a room. Others completely take over the conversation.

Meet Redon by Paul Montgomery.

Inspired by the fantastical decorative panels painted by French Symbolist artist Odilon Redon in 1900, this mural is less “wallpaper” and more “I casually live inside a fabulous piece of art.”

Floating flowers, abstract trees, dreamy organic shapes, and gloriously unexpected color create an almost surreal landscape. It’s romantic, moody, a little strange, and completely captivating. In other words, beige people need not apply.

I especially love the enormous scale. This is not a timid little repeat trying to behave itself behind the sofa. Redon wants the whole wall, preferably the whole room, and frankly, I think we should give it what it wants.

I’m imagining it wrapped around a dining room with lacquered trim, enveloping a powder room like a jewel box, or creating a wildly chic bedroom where absolutely nothing else needs to match.

Because matching is overrated.

Drama is not.

And walls should never be boring.
