Jewelry Love: Elizabeth Sayles Jewelry

I am introducing those newer followers to one of my favorite jewelry designers who I have featured before HERE.  It is no secret I have a jewelry addiction and you need to know about this secret source.

I have been Insta friends with this designer for almost a decade.  I have lots of her pieces and am always tempted for more.

She curates amazing vintage as well as designs her own.

Enjoy getting to know

Elizabeth Sayles

Los Angeles, California

What is your training?

I started taking courses in jewelry from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) when I was 16 years old during my summer break. I loved the classes and the creative process but didn’t end up pursuing it and instead went into fashion. Many years later, I was mentored by a friend in the industry who motivated me to start my own jewelry line. I’ve been doing it ever since.

What inspires you and your designs?

Jewelry from other eras. I’ve always been obsessed with antique and vintage jewelry, especially anything retro. My new pieces that I make are often a reference to the 80’s and 90’s. More is more whether it’s rings, necklaces or earrings. In Los Angeles our clothing is very minimal and our accessories are over the top.

What is your favorite piece?

It is so hard for me to pick but I definitely gravitate more towards my larger pieces. I love my bold horseshoe ring, large owl pendants, and my huge clovers. Here are pictures of my favorites.

How has your area influenced your work?

Beginning my career in New England and then continuing in Southern California has made me switch up my design aesthetic. LA is rock n roll and bohemian. Designs that work here are not designs that would necessarily work in New York. My work has always been a mix of antique and new. In California I take a more whimsical approach to my designs. There’s a definite bohemian vibe here; understate elegance.

What is your favorite restaurant in LA?

I have two. I love Jar and Angelini Osteria. My favorite at Jar is the filet mignon and the apple celery salad.

At Angelini Osteria I could eat their tuna tartar everyday.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Always a Moscow Mule.

How do you balance personal life and work?

It’s challenging when you own your own company. I try to fit in some “me” time but often it will be activities that will inspire my collection.

Dream trip?

Nothing too over the top or elaborate. It would definitely be Harbor Island in the Bahamas. It’s just so easy. There is nothing there but the crystal blue sea and nothing to do but be with myself and relax.

Dream Commission?

Producing a jewelry line for Goop.

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

I love to give wonderful finds from my travels from Europe; specifically pieces that are vintage and antique. They may not have cost a ton but they are so much more meaningful to the host because they have a story behind them.

Who is your style icon?

Gwyneth Paltrow

Your favorite up and coming artist / designer or jewelry designer?

Hands down Lisa Eisner. Her use of color and texture blow my mind.

What is your most treasured possession?

My french bulldog, Walter, and my antique, blue apothecary jars from Paris.

What are you reading?

I’m reading Killing Crazy Horse by Bill O’Reilly and loving it.

What are you listening to?

I listen to lots of 80’s and 90’s, always on rotation Fleetwood Mac, Arcade Flyer, and Led Zeppelin.

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

My favorite publications are Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar

Some of my favorite blog’s are The English Room, Cattlebaron In Cashmere, Apartment Therapy and any and every cooking blog.
