Happy Travel Tuesday, friends!

After last week’s deep dive into the fabulous hotel world of Martin Brudnizki, I clearly wasn’t ready to move on. And really, can you blame me?

This week we’re heading straight to London for perhaps one of his most deliciously maximalist creations: Matteo’s at Annabel’s.

Located inside the legendary private members’ club Annabel’s in Mayfair, Matteo’s was designed as an homage to the original Annabel’s at 44 Berkeley Square, the iconic London nightclub founded in 1963. Brudnizki took all that old-school glamour and turned the volume WAY up.

Think deep red walls, patterned carpet, tasseled furniture, mirrored ceilings, gilding, fabulous art and layer upon layer of color and pattern. There is even a gilded Buddha that originally lived in the old Annabel’s.

In other words, restraint was not invited to dinner.

And I am completely smitten.

The palette of reds, yellows, greens and purples should probably be too much, yet somehow it all works. The rooms feel collected rather than decorated, as if an eccentric English aunt with impeccable taste spent decades traveling the world, buying art and refusing to throw away a single fabulous lampshade.

THIS is maximalism done right.

What I particularly love about Matteo’s is that beneath all the fabulousness, there is a real sense of history. Original artworks were repurchased and returned to the space, while elements like the floral carpeting, tassels and Buddha deliberately reference the old Annabel’s. Then Brudnizki threw in mirrored ceilings and a glass bar to make the whole thing feel fresh rather than nostalgic.

It’s glamorous. It’s cheeky. It’s sexy. It’s layered.

And yes, it makes me want to wallpaper something red immediately.

Matteo’s is technically an Italian restaurant, but for design lovers it feels more like a destination unto itself. It is exactly the kind of room I want to discover when traveling, a place where the interiors are every bit as memorable as whatever lands on the table.

Sadly for those of us without the appropriate little black membership card, Annabel’s is a private club, so Matteo’s isn’t exactly a restaurant you casually pop into between Harrods and cocktails.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t obsess over every inch.

And speaking of Annabel’s, my interest is officially piqued by the news that the legendary London club is crossing the pond. Annabel’s New York is expected to open in 2027 in the Meatpacking District, taking over the fabulous historic “Little Flatiron” building at 675 Hudson Street. Even better? Martin Brudnizki is reportedly designing the interiors. If London is any indication, I suspect this will be one VERY fabulous room and absolutely one to watch.
