If joy could wag its tail, it would probably look like a Russell Miyaki painting.

I’m completely smitten with Miyaki’s wildly expressive animal portraits, where dogs burst to life through fearless brushstrokes, electric color, and contagious personality. These aren’t your traditional pet portraits—they’re energetic celebrations of loyalty, happiness, and all the reasons we love our four-legged companions.

A third-generation Japanese American artist and creative director, Miyaki draws inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, creating works that feel spontaneous, joyful, and wonderfully alive. Every swipe of paint captures more than a likeness—it captures spirit. Whether it’s a regal Doberman, a mischievous Jack Russell, or an inquisitive Beagle, each piece radiates character and heart.

His work reminds me that art doesn’t always have to be serious to be significant. Sometimes the best pieces simply make you smile—and isn’t that exactly what we need more of?
