What is your training?
university of cape town michaelis school of fine art
What inspires you and your designs?
can you pull inspiration apart in that way, and be particular about the source? I’m not sure. It’s a cumulative effect…. but I must admit it usually starts with tea….
What is your favorite piece?
every piece is my favourite. until I’m done. then I’m not happy with it…
How has the your area influenced your work?
it hasn’t. I’m the same, regardless of where I find myself.
What is your favorite restaurant in (your city)?
Anatoli’s – by far the best restaurant in Cape Town.
Muro – by far the best restaurant in Venice
What is your favorite cocktail?
How do you balance personal life and work?
I don’t. if you love what you do you’re happy to blur all this…
Dream trip?
No wait. you said dream. Mars.
Dream commission?
Aung San Suu Kyi. I’ve painted her many times… but imagine being commissioned by her?
I’ve been trying to help Aung San Suu Kyi. I did a portrait of her for the 54th Venice Biennale thinking it might raise awareness. While in Venice for the show I got the idea to call up her lawyer and ask him if he needed funds for her legal matters. He said he was fine, but put me in touch with her foundation. I’m now working with them.
Each dot of the Aung San Suu Kyi painting was a representation of a flag of the world. that’s South Africa in the middle.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
I don’t even know what this is. clearly I’m a shit host/hostess
Who is your style icon?
Again, no idea what this is. How about Don Johnson in Miami Vice? too 80s? maybe it was just the car that I loved. no, those tshirts with white jackets. That was cool dammit. I probably couldn’t pull it off though. I’d just look like an expensive ice-cream.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Dan Smith from Listener. Great guy too.
What is your most treasured possession?
I have a bolt that went into space. I have a 3rd Century Roman die… it’s hard to pick. depends which direction I’m looking in…
What are you reading?
A kid’s book in french. the kid has lost her ball. it’s quite distressing. I’m not sure I should be so anxious whilst learning a foreign language….
What are you listening to?
Well now that you got me onto it, Listener: Wooden Heart.
