Travel Tuesday: Mountain Magic, 5 Fabulous Southeastern Escapes for Fall & Winter

I am always dreaming of my next far-flung adventure, but sometimes the best escapes are practically in our own backyard. Especially when they involve fabulous interiors, roaring fires, incredible food, and a little horseback riding. You know I am easily persuaded by a horse and a beautiful hotel.

The Southeast has some seriously chic mountain retreats that are perfect for fall foliage, cozy winter weekends, and a little well-deserved indulgence. Think cashmere, cowboy boots, cocktails, and absolutely no roughing it.

These five fabulous mountain escapes have me ready to pack a bag. Or three. You know I don’t travel light!

1. Primland, Auberge Collection | Meadows of Dan, Virginia

Perched on 12,000 spectacular acres in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Primland is the ultimate combination of rugged adventure and refined luxury. Think gorgeous accommodations, incredible mountain views, horseback riding, golf, fly fishing, and a fabulous spa.

The treehouses overlooking the Dan River Gorge are particularly dreamy, and the property’s observatory for stargazing is such a special touch.

A little adventure by day and serious luxury by night. My kind of roughing it!

2. Cataloochee Ranch | Maggie Valley, North Carolina

This one speaks directly to my horse-loving heart!

Originally established in 1933, Cataloochee Ranch has been beautifully reimagined as a luxury mountain retreat while retaining its authentic Western spirit. The restored lodge and cabins are full of rustic charm, with gorgeous mountain views and plenty of opportunities to saddle up.

Horseback riding, hiking, elevated Southern cuisine, and cozy evenings around the fire make this an especially appealing fall escape. There are even winter skiing opportunities nearby.

Cowboy boots, cashmere, and cocktails. What more could a girl want?

3. The Swag | Waynesville, North Carolina

Tucked high in the Great Smoky Mountains, The Swag is one of those intimate, magical places that feels like a true escape from the world.

The charming log cabins, stone fireplaces, spectacular views, and wonderful hospitality create the quintessential mountain experience. Spend your days hiking, exploring the surrounding wilderness, or simply enjoying the scenery.

This is the place to put down your phone, pour a glass of wine, and settle in by the fire with a good book.

Pure mountain magic.

4. Blackberry Farm | Walland, Tennessee

Blackberry Farm is practically synonymous with Southern luxury, and for good reason.

Set on 4,200 gorgeous acres in the foothills of the Smokies, this celebrated retreat is a dream for food lovers, design enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates impeccable hospitality.

The beautifully appointed accommodations, extraordinary farm-to-table cuisine, impressive wine program, and endless activities make it hard to imagine ever leaving.

From horseback riding and fly fishing to spa treatments and fabulous dinners, Blackberry Farm gets everything just right.

And the interiors? Southern sophistication at its absolute finest.

5. Blackberry Mountain | Walland, Tennessee

Blackberry Farm’s equally fabulous sister property takes mountain luxury in a slightly different direction.

Blackberry Mountain is all about wellness, adventure, architecture, art, and reconnecting with nature. The contemporary mountain accommodations are beautifully designed, with natural materials, dramatic views, and an understated sophistication that I absolutely adore.

Hiking, spa treatments, creative experiences, and incredible cuisine are all part of the experience.

This is where I would go to recharge, get inspired, and pretend I am going to become a person who meditates every morning.

One can dream.

Whether your idea of a perfect mountain weekend involves horseback riding through colorful fall foliage, hiking in the crisp winter air, indulging in a spectacular meal, or doing absolutely nothing beside a roaring fire, these five destinations deliver.

I am particularly drawn to the equestrian charm of Cataloochee Ranch, but I would happily pack my bags for any of them.

Now, who is ready for a mountain getaway? I have the boots, sweaters, and oversized luggage ready to go!
